Body Mass Index (BMI)
is a widely used measure to categorize individuals based on their body weight relative to their height. The standard BMI categories for adults are as follows:
-
Underweight: BMI less than 18.5
-
Normal weight: BMI between 18.5 and 24.9
-
Overweight: BMI between 25 and 29.9
-
Obesity: BMI of 30 or more
These classifications are endorsed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

It’s important to note that while BMI is a useful screening tool, it does not directly measure body fat and may not account for factors such as muscle mass, bone density, overall body composition, and racial and sex differences. Therefore, BMI should be considered alongside other assessments for a comprehensive evaluation of an individual’s health.
